Green Matters Natural Dye Company started with a 3 gallon stock pot and an idea between co-founders Tyler Stoltzfus and Winona Quigley. Winona was incorporating natural dyes in her thesis research at Parsons The New School for Design, while Tyler was brainstorming business ideas for the annual business competition held at Temple University. The conversation began, and the idea took root. After a year of hard work, Green Matters went on to win first place in the social track for Temple’s Be Your Own Boss Bowl.
Shortly after, Winona and Tyler formalized Green Matters Natural Dye Company as an operating business in Lancaster County, PA. A shared interest in helping the planet developed into a broad understanding of the impact the textile industry has on the planet, and a desire to create change. After years of natural dye development in the form of kettle dyeing, 2018 brought new and excited developments for our production system. We now operate using 3 industrial paddle dye machines that have been customized for plant based dye. These dye machines allow for more consistency and larger dye lots.
Green Matters Natural Dye Company aims to bring pollution free color to the textile industry by using all natural dye ingredients. The use of synthetic dye materials is completely eliminated in the process. The excess natural dye material can be used as a natural fertilizer and reintroduced back into soil completing the sustainability cycle.
The idea continues to grow and is taking a life of its own. We are striving to bring about a new awareness. We want help educate consumers about the many benefits of natural dye, while working with businesses to develop unique naturally dyed color palettes for their products. By eliminating harmful chemicals in the production of textiles, Green Matters is contributing to the health of our waterways and planet making for a better tomorrow.
